Web Programming

Perl
The most common scripting language used for developing CGI (Common Gateway Interface) applications is Perl. Perl is high level, interpreted language. It is particularly good at text processing, and supports "regular expressions".
Python
Where do programming languages get their names? Well in the case of Python, it's named after Monty Python's Flying Circus, not a snake! Python is an interpreted , object-oriented programming language similar to Perl, that has gained popularity because of its clear syntax and readability.
PHP
PHP stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor (the acronym is recursive - a rather geeky "joke") and is a server side scripting language, that is used on this site amongst many others. Unlike Perl, it was designed specifically for use in web development.
JavaScript
Unlike Perl/Python/PHP, JavaScript is a client side scripting language - this means it downloaded to a browser, where it is then executed. Because it runs on the web surfer's PC, it has been used by hackers.
JavaScript is often used to implement interactive content such as "rollover" buttons which change appearance when the user moves their mouse over them.
Unfortunately, more and more people are disabling JavaScript execution in their browsers as a security measure, so many sites that use JavaScript are not working the way they were intended because of this. But in most cases where JavaScript is used for special effects, like rollovers, there is an alternative - CSS.
CSS
CSS - Custom Style Sheets - is not a scripting language, but many things previously developed using scripting languages to provide interactive content can be reproduced in static HTML with clever usage of style sheets.
MySQL Databases
MySQL is an open source database which, although it may be lacking some of the features of the database heavyweights like Oracle and DB2, is free and is fast - which explains why it is so popular as the engine behind so many database driven websites.
Unfortunately, many website developers have limited knowledge of database theory and so create poorly designed data-models and so cripple the performance of the website.
